The What and Why of Hydroponics?

Very often we have been asked “What exactly is Hydroponics?” or  “Why grow plants using Hydroponics?” Here is our attempt to address all our readers who have similar questions.

What is Hydroponics?

Hydroponics is a method of growing plants (any kinds of plant that grows to a maximum height of 4 to 5 feet) using only water as a medium of growth. i.e. no soil is used.

What can be grown using Hydroponics:

  • Spinach
  • Basil
  • Corriander
  • Mint
  • Parsley
  • Amaranth
  • Lettuce
  • Kale
  • Brinjal
  • Cucumber
  • Tomatoes
  • Cherry Tomatoes
  • Chillies
  • Capsicum
  • Okra
  • Bitter Gourd
  • Bottle Gourd
  • Strawberries and many more.

Why hydroponics?

Listed below are a few of the reasons.

  • Reuse or recycling of water – thus more than 85% less usage of water as compared to soil
  • Monitored and controlled growing of crops
  • Higher yield. More yield per unit of land as multiple layers of growing is possible.
  • Lesser / no requirement of pesticides – so pesticide-free food!
  • Can be applied both indoors and outdoors.

The above are a few of the main reasons why growing crops hydroponically is a very important and vital means to sustain our environment especially with the kind of strain we are currently putting on all our natural resources.

Given the ease of implementation of this methodology, anyone wishing to experiment with the same can do so without having to invest much money. Anyone attempting to grow fresh produce on at home can start from as low as ₹100.

As on date, India and most countries in the world are consuming all kinds of pesticide-laden produce. If one were to grow whatever is possible at home, then the point of ingesting pesticide-ridden food will reduce drastically.

Many would opine that the best and the biggest investment options for the coming generation is equity or debt – but in my opinion,  there is no better investment for the coming generation than their Health!

How to start

  1. Start by doing the basic – decide what you want to grow.
  2. Understand the details – here is a blog to help you get started.
  3. Give it the essential nutrients it needs to enable it to grow.
  4. Care for it.
  5. Harvest the crop.

Happy Growing!

Sometimes you choose your profession. Sometimes God chooses your profession for you. For me it was the latter – The quest to find purpose and expression came in the form of my work. A connection with soil, water, growth and life.

As a kid, I would secretly wish that grown-up life was just like my childhood – running around luscious green fields, feeding the farm cows, chasing and being chased by hens, goats, cousins, the wind in my hair, the rain on my face, the smell of the earth after a rain, and the sound of non-stop laughter.

It was a sad day, when I realised that my wish was just that – a wish! Its been a personal mission for me to recreate the magic of my childhood in any way possible and contribute to clean air, smiling faces, nourishing food, happier homes all with a sense of awe and gratitude. Thus I found my way to CityGreens – here I help people sow, plant, nurture, care and harvest plants. Through plants a better home and life.

When I was not running around and playing with my cousins and farm animals I also managed to do my B.Tech and MBA.
